Carl Sandburg College Brings Electrical Course to Hancock County

In the next ten years, the electrical industry will see 50% of it’s skilled workers retire. As you can imagine his will negatively effect the companies in and around Hancock County that employ electrical workers. This also means that individuals beginning their secondary education or looking to train in a new skill have the opportunity to train in a career that will be desperately needed.

To meet this need, Hancock County Economic Development Corporation has supported Carl Sandburg College in bringing an Electrical Fundamentals Class to Hancock County in February. The course and registration information is below. If the interest is great enough in this course, we could see it expanded to a full Basics in Manufacturing Certification that would include welding training and manufacturing math. The goal of this endeavor is to ensure that people of Hancock County have the means to adapt and prepare for the changing needs of our employers.

To ensure that as many barriers as possible are removed for those who wish to learn and work, the HCEDC is offering four $250 scholarships for qualified students. ELT.100.800, Electrical Fundamentals Class:   This three-credit hour course introduces the fundamentals of electrical and electronic circuits. Calculation and measurement of voltage, current, and resistance are emphasized. Through the use of lab activities, various wiring and testing methods utilizing multimeters are investigated.

  • 12- week class using an AC/DC Electrical Systems Trainer
  • Meets three times a week, February 8- May 4.
  • Held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. with labs on Wednesdays from 4- 7 p.m. at the Branch Campus in Carthage
  • First course in the Basic Industrial and Manufacturing Maintenance Certificate

Cost: $520 which includes tuition and fees.  Financial assistance for qualified students available for dual credit and traditional students through financial aid and through the Sandburg dual credit scholarship and scholarships available through the Hancock County Economic Development Corporation.
